We have a couple of shows coming up in the interior.  We are heading back to play Villager’s Pub in Fruitvale on July 10, and then we play an outdoor benefit concert called Cars, Concerts and Causes in Trail BC at Gyro park starting at 6 pm with guests BlackLightProphet.

The Trail show is all ages and admission is by donation.  Both bands will be donating a portion of their proceeds to the foundation as well.

Like I said, I had gone through a lot of pain and strange gravelly phases in my voice and decided to hit the ENT up for a visit.  Of course, these days with our amazing health care, I had to wait 3 months but when I finally got in to see the guy, I was faced with a singers worst nightmare.  I had a vocal granuloma meaning a lump on one of my vocal cords.

The doctor said I would need to take prescription antacid pills, in case it was caused by acid reflux and see if it healed in a few months.  I knew it was from that one night on tour where I let my emotions get the best of me so of course, the prescription didn’t work.   When I had my follow up appointment, he said it had not healed so I had 2 options: 1. Don’t speak for a month and keep taking the medication or, 2. Go under the knife.

Option 2 was my choice since I really needed to be able to get on with my life.  As a teacher and performer of music, I use my voice all day and then having gigs at night sometimes after speaking all day makes it that much tougher to heal the old fashioned way so I bit the bullet.

The day of surgery was fairly strange.  I had to be put under and the first thing I heard when I woke up was a nurse saying don’t talk please.   I didn’t know where the hell I was till it clicked in;  “You’re in the hospital goofball!”   She handed me a clipboard and said I could write down what I wanted to eat/drink.  I had to face reality; this was now my only form of communication to the outside world for the next week.

That was one of the toughest weeks of my life. Try not being able to say a word when people say hello or when cashiers try to chat.  I must have seemed like the rudest jerk they had ever seen.  Oh well, I wanted to heal perfectly and nobody was going to keep me from that goal.

After that week I started to speak here and there.  The pain was gone, my voice felt much better.  I lost a few months after that as well since it takes 8 weeks after to fully recover but now I am happy to say I am 100% ready to rock.

The moral of the story is, don’t let your emotions get the best of you no matter what because you can lose a lot more than your temper sometimes.

Now, time to get some Christmas shopping done…

The day after day travel mixed with the terrible food (Taco Time anyone?) and lack of sleep makes it very easy to get sick especially when you are putting demands on your voice every single night.

One such instance literally landed me in the hospital!

We were about 3/4 of the way through our tour schedule that spring and had played around 25 shows.  We had 6 nights in a row in Eastern Canada and on about day 3 in a row, I caught a nasty cold.  Trouble is, we were about to play in Fredericton where we had a decent amount of airplay and not only that, we were actually getting paid a somewhat fair wage for the 2 nights were scheduled to play.

Some vocal teachers recommend total rest when the infection is in or around your upper chest but we could not afford to miss these shows, after all, we had travelled thousands of kms and this was one of the towns we really looked forward to playing.

I felt like dogshit but I went on like a trooper anyway and we played about 5 songs, my voice croaking the whole time.  I ended up letting my emotions get the best of me since I knew I could do so much better if I was healthy.  I decided on the spot during an angry section of the last song to let loose with a scream Dave Grohl would be proud of.  Immediately following this, I felt something snap in my larynx.  Not good!

I cancelled the show after that and did not speak for the rest of the evening or the next day.  We made it through the next night but my voice was clearly damaged and never recovered from that point on til the end of the tour.

After getting off the road, I took a rest for a while but my throat stayed gravelly and now it was getting really sore to talk.  Finally after suffering with a sore throat for months, I decided to hit up the local ENT to find out what the hell was going on.

Everyone’s favorite Vancouver rockers Fear Zero will perform two shows at Western Speedway in Langford, August 8 and August 9. The band will be performing during and after the Monster Truck Show. How better to end the summer? Smashing cars and crashing cymbals, a rock n roll experience like never before.

Fear Zero will be releasing a limited edition CD for the event presented by 100.3 the Q and Western Speedway. The band will also use the Western Speedway backdrop for their next music video being shot during the concert. And you can be a part!
