After many all nighters and thousands of dollars, I am happy to say that “Whole Damn Nation” is nearly finished.  Right now we are in the mastering stage where all the levels and equalization get evened out.

The last recording session was an all night one, just me and my guitar in a studio somewhere in North Surrey from 10pm to 7am.  It was an awful night and here is why:

#1  To start the evening off, as I was about to get out of my car to load my equipment, a cyclist ran right into my door as I opened it.  It was 9pm at night, very dark, and the guy was wearing no reflective gear.  I checked my mirror as I always do before I open my door and all I saw was a couple of headlights from a truck, no cyclist.  The guy lived and scraped himself up off the ground after taking off a part of my car door in the collision and rode off with barely a word.  Great start to the evening.

#2 Once I got to the studio, I quickly realized that a lot of the wiring was not what I needed it to be.  Cables out of phase, snake inputs dead, various things meant to snafu the proceedings.  I eventually got to actually playing music at nearly 2am, right when my brain was screaming, “Sleeeeeeeeeeep!”

#3  I had been in editing mode for so long without getting to practice, my hands were not ready to record the demanding piece of music that evening.  I got it done in about triple the time it should have taken for that reason.

#4  There were no second chances, hundreds of dollars were on the line so I HAD to finish or else.

#5  Rush hour traffic at 7:00am sucks from Surrey to North Vancouver.

#6  All the coffee I ingested (thanks John) prevented me from getting any sleep so I went to work as is, staying up for nearly 40 hours.  It was definitely a first time experience that I hope not to repeat.

Anyway, all whining aside, I am really looking forward to getting back out to play some shows for y’all and I hope you take a few minutes to check it out when it comes out.

The 2 Fear Zero shows in August went quite well, considering it was the first time all 4 of us have ever graced a stage together in over a year.  We performed a mix of old tunes and new ones to a couple of crowds over 1,000 which was pretty damn cool!  Hopefully we can snag a nice tour with a bigger act so we can get out and play some more.

I am hard at work these days finishing  up producing the new Fear Zero stuff and we head in to mix Sept. 14 so we will hopefully have this long overdue music available by October or so.

Pre-pro is where the producer comes in and basically changes any song arrangements that need to be changed (minimally on these songs thank goodness) and then goes through drum arrangements to make sure every fill, every groove, every nuance of the drum track is exactly what the song needs.  Very time consuming and boring at times but very necessary for the final quality of the drum track.  Gone are the days of drinking all day, heading to the studio at midnight to pop some acid then record a whole album in one take.  Recording is a science now.

Tony, Fear Zero’s drummer extaordinaire came down to Armoury Studios Monday and we tracked 5 songs over the course of a 16 hour day.  He was sweating let me tell ya but he did a fantastic job and I am very pleased with the final results and I am sure you will be too!  We videotaped some performances and I will post them here soon.

Thursday the next phase begins.  We are heading to Soundwave studio in Surrey to record guitars, keys, and vocals over a 4 day period on 5 songs.  Nothing like doing five sixteen hour days to get that studio tan sheen going! 

Once this is done, we head to Victoria for a couple of big shows at Western Speedway (our first in over a year) then back to the studio to mix the songs in late August.

In case you had not figured out yet, we are actually taking 5 songs from our last CD “In Lights” and are repackaging it with 5 new songs and a guitar solo called Octane that, if  you have been reading the blogs, you are aware of already.

The reason behind this decision are plenty but to sum it up, we recently added a manager with some great contacts to our camp and now with his skills and knowledge, we believe those songs will have a better chance getting out to the general public.  They deserve to be heard I believe were his words.
Anyway, not much to say this week other than I am very much enjoying this new Vancouver weather called summer and I have included a little video clip of me playing Octane from a few weeks ago.
